About this wine
93 POINT Pinot Noir is on the board! A beloved and long-standing vineyard that helped Oregon become a Pinot Powerhouse — at swoon-worthy savings of UNDER $20! Beaux Frères. Cristom. Antica Terra. Bergström, Penner-Ash, Lingua Franca, and Patricia Green. Yes…I just rattled off some of Oregon Pinot Noir’s greatest houses — but what they really have in common is THIS legendary vineyard. HYLAND vineyard is a Willamette Valley ICON — supplying fruit for Oregon’s pioneering Pinot producers since the early 1970s, some 40 miles southwest of Portland. Over 200 acres of pristine, unspoilt land — where marine sediment and volcanic topsoil rest upon a rigid, 2,000-foot-thick (that’s THICCCC!) bedrock of ocean floor uplifted to 600-800 feet above sea level. Warmer winters, cooler summers, and the sort of clonal variation that would make a Burgundian geneticist weep! Pommard, Wädenswil, Dijon 115, and a whole section of the original Coury clones that were planted in 1971…just Pinot heaven to the max! These folks are old-school grape growers who’ve only been keeping fruit for their own wines since 2011. But as limited as their production is (and spread very thinly across a whole series of individual clonal bottlings), the quality is BIG TIME. The juice is perfumed, delicate, and ethereal — loaded with roses, summer cherries, hibiscus, and orange zest. The flavors are elegant, with even more cherries, and cranberries, accented with dusty graphite and salty sea spray, with a lovely Oolong tea character. The backbone is sturdy, yet never imposing, and this pervasive and persuasive Pinot purrrrs rather than shouts. King Salmon is hitting the farmers markets across Napa Valley — and this 93 POINT gem is the perfect foil. A medley of spring peas and morel mushrooms wouldn’t be amiss either — and since you’re saving OVER 68% OFF the winery price by getting this beauty straight from your truly…go on and be a little extra when it comes to securing the ingredients that are going to make this SING! While it lasts!
