Jacopo Biondi Santi Castello di Montepò Morellino di Scansano 2021
Tuscany · Maremma · Super Tuscan Blends
About this wine
Sell out alert!! Did we just drop Italy's GREATEST wine value of all-time?! Yup. 95 POINTS, The Biondi-Santi’s famed Sangiovese BBS11 clone – the very same clone that helped make the world’s very first Brunello and elevated the Biondi-Santi to one of the tippy-top BEST wine producers in all of Italy, and the world, and the UNIVERSE...for WHAT price?! We’ve resumed normal, non-Marathon shipping of all daily offers – but that is just about the ONLY normal thing about today’s STELLAR offer! Castello di Montepò, good people – the ONLY winery still owned, operated, and started by the actual BIONDI-SANTI family is already putting the spotlight on Tuscany’s Maremma region with their 100 point Cru series. We discovered this KILLER value estate Sangiovese soon after – and who could turn away from 95 POINTS and a simply UNREAL PRICE! Not even $30?! That’s INSANE – for anything, literally ANYTHING that bears the Biondi-Santi crest – especially an estate Sangiovese (with a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon) on PRISTINE galestro soils (and one dreamworthy estate complete with a thousand-year-old castle)! I mean, HUZZAH! If you’ve never heard of Morellino di Scansano, you’re not alone – this tiny village of Scansano, in the most remote and least populated part of Tuscany – has barely been a blip on the wine world’s radar for decades. Things are changing quickly however – top-notch producers like Castello Romitorio and Celestina Fé, and yes…CASTELLO DI MONTEPÒ bringing the heat! I tasted this as the estate’s entry wine – and while it most certainly is…the difference isn’t quality – it’s APPROACHABILITY! Soft, fruit-forward, with plenty of cherry-driven POP, a kiss of cigar box, tobacco, and wild herbs a’plenty. Focused energy and graceful minerality keep this hanging about for FAR LONGER than any under $30 wine has a right to – this flat-out ROCKS, my friends! But hey, what else would you expect from THE Biondi Santi family after all!!! Jacopo Biondi Santi – a leader in his family’s illustrious winery for decades – bought the Castello di Montepò in the early 80s, meticulously planting over 120 acres, mostly to his family’s completely unique and prized Sangiovese BBS11 clone, with some Cabernet Sauvignon and a small parcel of Merlot as well. The estate lies on the edge of the hillside village of Scansano, only about 10 miles from the sea, and separated from Montalcino by a range of mountains, and is only about 20 miles away. Jacopo and his son, Tancredi, make the wines hand-in-hand here, and they speak about the potential of Scansano as though they traveled back in time to Montalcino over 50 years ago. We’ve said this to anyone who will listen – this is the NEXT big region in Italy. And the prices are just starting to creep up – as the world awakens to this rising giant. I say again – 95 POINTS…UNDER $30…what are you waiting for?!
