About this wine
Spritzers, Americanos, Negronis, and MORE!!! This Mommenpop is a MUST have for your bar shelf! Hopefully you got a mountain of that Ruby Red — but just like I will never limit myself to just one whiskey…variety is the spice of life!!! Every now and again, nothing – and I mean NOTHING beats a cocktail. And that, my wine-loving friends, is where Mommenpop’s surreally delicious BLOOD ORANGE aperitivo comes into play! ONLY FOURTEEN DOLLARS are we straight up CRAZY?!?! Yes. But as so often the case in the world today – the madness is WINNING! Here at least…that’s a good thing! Just look at that violent red bottle of shimmering abrosia. Stunning. Think Campari – but without the intense bitterness (or the downright nasty food coloring…did you know for years American Campari was dyed red through the pulverized carcasses of little red bugs called Cochineal?! YUCK!) Mommenpop HOWEVER – is crafted right here in Napa Valley by winemaker Samantha Sheehan (her POE wines are fantastic!), and uses organically grown BARBERA grapes to make a wine that is then infused with TONS of California-grown blood orange, gorgeously spiced with vanilla bean, cardamom, and hibiscus. That’s it, that’s all! NO ADDED SUGAR, NO ADDED SULFITES, AND NO ARTIFICIAL COLORINGS! I mean, it just can’t be beat! Seriously delicious. And that $14 PRICE!!! Unbeatable. Truly. I loaded up on CASES of this stuff as soon as it rolled off the truck – anything that uses Aperol, or Campari, or even Carpano Antica can be transformed with this bottle of Blood Orange bad-assery. Perfectly balanced (all-natural) sweetness, but never cloying, with a nice jab of citrus pith bitterness, and a velvety, juicy texture that works with EVERYTHING! Gin, vodka, whiskey, mezcal, SPARKLING WINE – oh, ho, HO!!! Even just over ice with a splash of seltzer water…simply divine. We snagged EVERYTHING we could…and now the chance is yours to keep this party going all year long! I’m batching out cocktails and bottling them up in 5 oz. bottles I picked up on Amazon…Christmas gifts…DONE! The opportunities are endless…while it lasts, at least! ** Give this a go in a riff on my favorite cocktail from Ashford Castle – The Last High King. 1.5oz Irish Whiskey, 0.75oz Mommenpop Blood Orange, 0.75oz Carpano Antica, and a dash or two of Angostura Bitters. Stir over ice, strain into a Rocks glass over a big cube, and garnish with a Luxardo cherry and orange peel. Yum. **
