Melon Blanc used to be known as Melon de Bourgogne – the famous grape of Muscadet, in the western Loire Valley. It’s from Burgundy originally, but the French farmers there pushed it far west, to the edge of the Loire Valley, where it almost went extinct. It was the Dutch port-builders who developed a love for it, not far from Nantes, and preserved the grape’s future. The BEST thing about this grape? Benchmark, CLASSIC, and wine-class teachable expressions of this brilliant grape can be found for about $30 or less. This…THIS top-of-the-line, simply surreal bottling is one of the best you can find ANYWHERE, at ANY price…and we scored it for just $18. EIGHTEEN DOLLARS! Lemon peel, grapefruit blossoms, honeydew melon aromas – all with that fantastic, slightly saline tinge that defines the melon blanc grape. The flavors are salted white plums, and creamy pears, with pomelo, lemon, and white grapefruits exploding like heaved citrus bombs (what? You DIDN’T have citrus wars as a kid? Weird…). Anywho…just think all things racy and uber-fresh, pulsing with an electric current of vim and vigor. I mean, you saw the 94 POINTS, right? At way, WAY UNDER $20?! It’s a no-brainer, folks, and Melon Blanc is definitely a Last Bottle favorite (and yours truly’s most ideal summertime companion). Here in Nantes, near the mouth of the mighty Loire River, Melon, at long last, has found its home. Melon has come back in a huge way in the last few years (we’re COMMANDEERING this train, all aboard), and this is simply amazing for the price!! The PERFECT poolside quaffer, beachfront sipper, grilled shrimp BBQ dinner...trust us...impossible to put down! If you drink sauvignon blanc on the regular...stop that! Drink more of this! If only it came in 3 liters! A six-pack will have to do, I guess, but a boy can dream!!!
