About this wine
93 points, single vineyard, Premier Cru POMMARD, from the one and only Romuald Valot! This is not a drill!!! HUZZAH, good people! Burghounds, Pinot-philes, and Pommard-purists…have we got something for you!!! PREMIER CRU Red Burgundy, from just south of the famed village of Pommard, from a single plot tucked right between the iconic Rugiens-Bas and Les Croix Noires climats…I give you…LES CHAPPONNIÈRES!!! Oh boy, Romuald Valot is back…and HOW!!! If you’ve scored any of his wines from us before, you already know – this guy is a certified STAR of modern-day Burgundy! Born of familial pedigree, forged by torching the crusty old guard and reestablishing himself in Beaujolais, and then returning as the prodigal son – to craft ROCKING Burgundy that brings purity, sustainability, and the sort of expression of unadulterated terroir that has become oh-so-rare in the modern age of chemically-consistent, modified and manipulated style of most Burgundies. If you’ve been burned by over-priced, under-delivery Burgundy before…you know EXACTLY what I’m ranting on – but I promise you – this…is…not…THAT! The elegant cascade of cherries, and rose-scented cedar, with deeply spiced elements of star anise, and clove, with dried porcini mushrooms, and tart red plums, then cooling mint and raspberry coulis, with this iron and earthy minerality that is softly enveloped in the sweet vanilla kiss of French oak…YES!!! You could EASILY mistake this for Grand Cru Burgundy…and age it for decades in the same fashion. Equal parts charming and mischievously disarming – this is the sort of Burgundy that keeps me hounding for more and more! All for OVER 67% OFF!!! We RARELY get to offer up Burgundy here on Last Bottle – there’s simply not enough wine, and the prices are usually CRAZY high. But this! THIS!!! We’re entering into the all-time great territory, my friends – one of Burgundy’s top Premier Crus, and a rising star parcel that has become a favorite for wineries like Albert Bichot, Olivier Leflaive, Pierre Girardin, Bouchard Pere et Fils, and now…Romuald Valot!!! That is some MIGHTY company for a tiny 7-acre plot…and this is a DAMN IMPRESSIVE bottling! Romuald was born not far from these parcels, in a long line of a vigneron family, all focused on Burgundy. And yet, growing up – working for the BIG houses of Burgundy, in those famed Grand Cru vineyards – he turned away from wine. He saw behind the curtain…with the chemical spraying in the vines, the overexertion and manipulation of the wines, the tricks of the trade to make a bad vintage seem ok…it was simply too much. So he bought a small cottage in nearby Beaujolais – and began making his own wines, with an old-school “one man and a field” approach that led to the purest expressions of place he could craft. He developed a loyal and sophisticated following – considered among the cutting edge of Beaujolais' new, elite, and transformative winemakers. “It’s about the wisdom and respect of nature – I am first and foremost a farmer, and my role is to produce in the healthiest way possible and to give the maximum pleasure I can in each bottle. I try to recreate a form of life that is free and wild in the vineyard...it’s the same with the wine, I prefer to have a beautiful parcel classified as a village wine than to vinify a cru wine without soul…” - Romuald Valot After years of making STUNNING Beaujolais…the PRODIGAL SON has returned to Burgundy!!! He’s carefully selected vineyards with character, and set about showcasing the tippy-top best expressions of each! This Premier Cru is one of his TOP parcels, and with ORGANIC farming, minimalistic winemaking, and some truly magic ju-ju thrown in the mix – I promise you, this is one of the tippy-top BEST Burgundies for the price in the USA today!! DO NOT MISS OUT!
